At the edge of Hawk Meadow is a willow wetland. This high quality habitat is a resting and nesting place for ducks, dragonflies, and many other creatures. One of the most intriguing explorations one can have at a wetland is to search for aquatic insects.

With a few simple tools - a white plastic pan and strainer or net attached to a pole - it is easy to make a few sweeps and collect a wide assortment of critters. The white pan allows for easy visibility of your catch. Be sure to carefully replace the insects and tadpoles when you are done.

The diversity of organisms you find is an indicator of the health of the wetland. Healthy wetlands are important for filtering wastewater runoff from areas covered by houses, pavement, shopping malls, and construction sites.

To visit a wonderful local facility dedicated to wetland education go to the Tennant Lake Interpretive Center run by Whatcom County Parks in Ferndale, Washington.
